By Jerrod Zisser

WHAT HAPPENED:

Ayman Soliman, a former chaplain at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and respected imam at Clifton Mosque, was detained by ICE on July 9 during a routine asylum check-in. Soliman, an Egyptian immigrant who had been living in the U.S. under asylum for more than a decade, was taken into custody without prior warning. ICE has transferred him to Butler County Jail, where he remains in detention.

WHY IT MATTERS:

Soliman has dedicated his life to serving his community—providing spiritual care to children and families facing unimaginable challenges. His sudden detention has alarmed faith leaders, elected officials, and immigrant advocates. Many fear that deporting him back to Egypt could expose him to danger and undo years of service he provided in the U.S.

This case highlights the expanding reach of the Trump administration’s deportation policies, which have swept up individuals who have lived legally in the U.S. for years without incident.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR:

Soliman’s legal team is preparing to request a bond hearing and challenge his asylum revocation. Meanwhile, public pressure is building, with local leaders demanding answers from ICE. The outcome of this case could set a troubling precedent for other long-term asylum holders.

BOTTOM LINE:

A man who spent years comforting the sick and grieving is now facing the unthinkable himself. His case underscores the human cost of aggressive immigration enforcement in today’s America.
