WHAT HAPPENED

President Donald Trump welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House this week—despite an active arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) accusing Netanyahu of war crimes in Gaza.

The ICC alleges that Netanyahu bears responsibility for using starvation as a method of warfare, targeting civilians, and blocking life-saving aid. This is the first time a U.S. ally has faced such charges.

Israel and the United States reject the court’s authority. Israel formally requested the ICC withdraw the warrant in May 2025. President Trump’s administration has gone further—sanctioning ICC judges in response to the court’s actions.

WHY IT MATTERS

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic:

  • More than 57,000 Palestinians have died since October 2023.

  • Thousands of children are among the dead or wounded.

  • Over 640 people have been killed at aid distribution points where desperate civilians were trying to get food.

  • Gaza’s hospitals are out of fuel, supplies, and water. Many are shutting down entirely.

The United Nations, the Red Cross, and over 200 NGOs have called this a “man-made famine” and a violation of international law.

Despite this, Trump and many in Congress continue to stand firmly by Netanyahu.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

  • The next steps from the ICC: Will the warrant be enforced or blocked?

  • Potential ceasefire breakthroughs in ongoing talks led by Qatar and Egypt.

  • Growing calls for accountability inside Israel, Europe, and the U.S.

  • The risk of famine, mass displacement, and infectious disease in Gaza.

BOTTOM LINE

Human lives are on the line. No diplomatic ceremony should overshadow the reality: Gaza is in crisis. The world must decide whether justice and basic human rights come before political alliances.
